Support to the LGBTQ+ community
Empowering Diversity, Celebrating Identity
With grant funding from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Mpilonhle has, since 2023, implemented a programme to provide support to the LGBTQ+ community.
Support to the LGBTQ+ community
Support for the LGBTQ+ community is limited in the rural and peri-urban areas where Mpilonhle works, which often lack the support groups found in urban centres. Mpilonhle provides counselling, health screening, and services tailored to this community.
For services not directly offered, clients are referred to the Department of Health and the Department of Social Development. To enhance outreach, Mpilonhle employs peer counsellors from the LGBTQ+ community to engage and support individuals in these areas.
Current Progress
In the first 18 months of the programme, Mpilonhle has provided services to over 3,000 LGBTQ+ individuals, with a special focus on Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM), a group that may not identify as LGBTQ+.
Without access to healthcare services such as HIV testing and treatment, this group may unknowingly contribute to the spread of HIV within both LGBTQ+ communities and cisgender women.
Stories of Strength & Support
Sanele shares his lived experience as a gay man. The challenges he’s faced, the resilience he’s built, and how Mpilonhle’s Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) Programme has made a difference in his life.
