Challenging and Changing Gender-Based Violence
Mpilonhle’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Programme deploys trained support workers within schools to identify learners who may be at risk and connect them with vital psychosocial support services.
Gender-Based Violence Programme
In partnership with the Department of Education, Mpilonhle has placed learner support staff in 50 schools. These support workers, often young graduates from the very schools they serve, are specially trained to identify potential cases of sexual abuse and GBV. When concerns are raised, cases are referred to Mpilonhle’s dedicated GBV team, which includes social workers, psychologists, and auxiliary social workers, for comprehensive assessment and ongoing support
Support and Referrals for Learners in Need
L earners receive thorough psychosocial counselling and emotional support whenever required. When additional care or specialised intervention is necessary, they are referred to a network of trusted partner organisations.
These include the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Social Development (DSD), Lifeline, and Thuthuzela Care Centres, all of which work collaboratively to ensure learners receive the comprehensive care and protection they need.
Building a Culture of Prevention and Empathy
The programme not only actively provides learners with a safe space where they feel supported and heard, but also promotes a culture of prevention and accountability within the school community.
By fostering awareness and understanding, it contributes to shaping a more informed and empathetic generation that recognises the importance of respect, consent, and protection for all individuals.
