Mpilonhle Learner Support Agent with primary school learners, advocating against bullying and GBV
November 2025
Mpilonhle, through funding from the Independent Development Trust (IDT), is implementing the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and School Cleaning Programme in the King Cetshwayo and uMkhanyakude districts as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). This initiative aims to create safer and more supportive school environments while addressing the high levels of unemployment.
As part of the programme, Learner Support Agents (LSAs) are placed in schools to educate learners about GBV, including domestic violence, bullying, and various forms of abuse.
They also conduct sessions on sexual and reproductive health, helping learners understand their rights, boundaries, and access to health services. LSAs also play an active role in identifying learners who may need support. They refer these cases to social workers or clinics to ensure that affected learners receive the care and guidance they need.

This school-based approach allows for early intervention and ensures that learners are supported within a familiar and trusted environment
The programme also contributes to creating a healthy learning space by promoting cleanliness and teamwork within schools. By combining education, awareness, and practical support, Mpilonhle’s initiative helps build schools where learners feel safe, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Through the continued support of the IDT and the dedication of our LSAs, Mpilonhle remains committed to protecting learners and strengthening the fight against gender-based violence in our communities
