In the beginning of September, Mpilonhle was honored to welcome the Deputy Minister Gina of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) for an official visit to our digital labs. The visit highlighted the progress made during the past three years of the pilot programme, which has been fully funded by DSTI, and explored opportunities for future expansion.
Since their launch, Mpilonhle’s digital labs have been at the forefront of bridging the digital divide in underserved communities. Over the pilot phase, thousands of young people have gained access to essential ICT skills, career development tools, and learning resources that prepare them for the modern workforce.
The Deputy Minister’s visit provided an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the labs so far and to discuss their potential for scaling beyond the pilot phase. Mpilonhle staff showcased how the labs are being used daily to support learners, train youth, and empower communities with digital literacy.
We were also joined by DSTI DDG Ms. Nombuyiselo Mokoena and Director Ms. Nozipho Zambuko amongst others from the Department of Education and community leaders.
The Deputy Minister commended Mpilonhle’s commitment to innovation and inclusion, reaffirming DSTI’s vision of using science and technology to build a more connected and empowered society.
Mpilonhle looks forward to working closely with DSTI to ensure the sustainability and growth of the digital labs, continuing to create opportunities and unlock potential for young people across the region.
