HELP US HELP OTHERS
Who We Are
We are a South African community-based organisation located in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Our mission is to identify and implement innovative solutions to the health and social challenges faced by young people in South Africa, particularly those living in poverty in rural areas.
The Birth of Mpilonhle
Mpilonhle was established as an NPO in 2006 with start-up funding from Oprah’s Angel Network and Charlize Theron, Academy Award-winning actor and UN Messenger of Peace. The funders approached Dr. Michael Bennish to develop an Integrated Mobile Health Programme in Schools, which included counselling and HIV Testing Services (HTS).
Dr. Bennish is a paediatrician and infectious disease expert who has worked in developing countries for over 30 years. Formerly a professor of medicine, paediatrics, and community health at Tufts University, he was also the founding director of the Africa Centre (now the Africa Health Research Institute), a leading research centre in South Africa.
Tracking Our Progress
Nineteen years later, Mpilonhle has worked in over 200 schools, utilising mobile clinics to deliver integrated health services to more than 200,000 learners, including providing HIV Testing Services (HTS) to over 110,000 students.
The programme has since been adopted and scaled up by the South African Government and is now known as the Integrated School Health Programme (ISHP) under the Department of Health.
Where We Stand Today
Over the years, Mpilonhle has added three more focus areas to its portfolio: Community Health, Computer-Based Learning, and Environmental Education.
Mpilonhle recently completed the implementation of the Global Fund AGYW project in King Cetshwayo District, KwaZulu-Natal. The project’s implementation strategy and results were widely regarded as the most successful among the six sub-recipients delivering the Global Fund AGYW project across South Africa.
