Michael Bennish
MD, Executive Director - Board

Michael co-founded Mpilonhle in 2006 and has been leading the organisation ever since. He mentors staff, engages with the community, and raises funds to support its work. A pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases, Michael was born in Detroit, Michigan, and has lived and worked in South Africa for 25 years. While in college, he worked in Detroit’s auto plants, plants earning the city its “Motown” nickname. He attended one of the first community-focused medical schools in the U.S. and has remained dedicated to community health throughout his career. Michael has been Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Community Health at Tufts University and visiting Professor of International Health at the University of Oxford, and was the first director of the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies, now the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI). 

Zola Madikizela
Chairperson

Mr. Madikizela is a development specialist and independent consultant. He was the South African Director of Atlantic Philanthropies, a major international philanthropy that focused on advancing justice, equality, and health. He served on a number of important South African Ministerial Advisory Committee on Primary Health Care Revitalisation, the Ministerial Steering Committee on Executive Leadership Training in Health, and the Board of Trustees of the Learning Trust. He is a graduate of the University of the Transkei, has a Master’s of Science in Population Studies from the University of Wales and an MPH from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before becoming Programme Executive and Director at Atlantic Philanthropies, Mr. Madikizela was a programme officer at the United Nations Population Fund, and a Community Liaison Officer at the NDOH.

Nomathandazo Mthembu
Director
Ms. Mthembu has an LLB degree from UKZN. She is Director of NP Mthembu Attorneys, and deals with commercial transactions, employment law litigation at the CCMA and Bargaining Councils as well as Labour Courts, as well as litigation matters, which include debt collection and restraint of trade matters. She is member of the Pesnion Lawyers Association and a member of the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa (IoDSA).
Dr Patrick Muzi Matse
Director
Dr. Matse is Senior Lecturer and Academic Leader, Community Development at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. He has a PhD and Postgraduate Diploma in Medical History from the University of Cambridge, UK, focusing on disease patterns. He also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Management and a Master of Public Health (MPH), both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before assuming his position at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr. Matse was the Community Component Manager and Project Manager at the Health Systems Trust. Dr. Matse played an important role in the reengineering Primary Health Care Project, where he focused on developing national data collection and M&E tools to be used by Community Health Workers at the household level. He conducted community dialogues to enhance engagement between the Department of Health and social cluster Government departments.
Marie-Christine Ryckaert
Capacity Development Specialist - Administration and Finance

Marie-Christine Ryckaert is a seasoned Programme Manager with extensive expertise in staff capacity development, organisational structure support, finance, and proposal writing. Originally from Belgium, she has lived in South Africa for over 25 years. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University and a Master’s Degree in International Higher Education from Lesley University. With over 35 years of senior management experience, Marie-Christine has held leadership roles both in South Africa and the United States, including serving as the Director of Executive Programmes at the Harvard Kennedy School, USA. 

Lindiwe Nene
Senior HR Office - Administration and Finance

Lindiwe Nene is a dedicated Human Resources professional with a strong background in HR and Administration. Born and raised in Mtubatuba. She began her career as an Office Assistant at the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies now known as AHRI. Through hard work and dedication, she advanced her career and now manages all human resources functions including payroll management at Mpilonhle. Lindiwe has deep roots in her community; she completed her education in Mtubatuba, got married there, and continues to live and work in her hometown.

What she enjoys most about her role is the opportunity to call candidates who genuinely need a job offer. However, she faces the ongoing challenge of retaining staff with specialised skills and keeping employees satisfied to reduce turnover.

Lindiwe loves watching sports, especially rugby (introduced to her by her younger son) and soccer matches. She also enjoys traveling with her family.

Nkanyiso Nxumalo
Bookkeeper - Administration and Finance

Nkanyiso Nxumalo is from Esikhawini and comes from a God-fearing family. He grew up in a rural area and completed his early education before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Zululand.

He works as an accounts officer/bookkeeper, a crucial role that helps guide the business and supports his personal and career growth. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer, watching games, and listening to the radio, especially for news updates about the world.

Sinqobile Dlamini
Administrative Assistant - Administration and Finance

Sinqobile Dlamini is an admin assistant at the Mpilonhle office in Richards Bay. She strives to create the best and most comfortable working environment for everyone by managing essential supplies, filing forms and documents, controlling equipment, and overseeing stock and stationery to facilitate the staff’s work.

Working closely with the transport department and collaborating remotely with the transport coordinator can be challenging at times due to the processes required to access the necessary vehicles. These procedures can be time-consuming, especially when work needs to be completed promptly.

In addition to her administrative duties, Sinqobile sees herself as a mediator between the Teza (main) office, the Richards Bay office, and the field staff. She often facilitates communication by crossing messages, documents, registers, and receipts among these three locations.

A young and vibrant woman, Sinqobile lives in a township called Esikhawini and holds a Bachelor of Technology from her tertiary studies. She was raised by her uncle and his wife, who is like a mother to her. As the only girl and the youngest in her family, she shares a close bond with them. In her free time, if she’s not reading a novel in her room, she enjoys exploring new places with friends or experimenting in the kitchen, baking and cooking new recipes with her aunt.

Ntandokazi Ndlela
Senior Finance Officer - Administration and Finance

Ntandokazi Ndlela is a dedicated Finance Officer holding a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Accounting from the University of Zululand. With extensive experience in financial administration across both profit and non-profit sectors, she excels in providing strategic input, ensuring compliance and financial controls. Known for her positive attitude and tireless energy, Ntando is a powerful force in the workplace, inspiring her colleagues to work hard and achieve their goals. She draws inspiration from her mother and two brothers, who motivate her to strive for excellence in all her endeavors. In her free time, Ntando enjoys connecting with her son through video calls, cherishing those moments of family bonding.

Rajesh Hansrajh
IT Technical Support Specialist - Administration and Finance

Rajesh Hansrajh is responsible for designing and maintaining the Information Technology infrastructure that supports Mpilonhle’s daily operations and its diverse outreach programs.With over 25 years of experience in the IT industry, spanning both commercial and medical sectors Rajesh has built a career that blends technical expertise with strategic innovation. 

Starting his career as a field technician, he advanced into consulting, specializing in technical services and business analytics for corporate clients.A key highlight of his career has been leading Mpilonhle’s research and development team in designing and implementing a mobile computer lab for public schools in rural areas of South Africa. This offline internet-based teaching aid, developed in collaboration with the Department of Science Technology and Innovation (DSTI), is now a patented solution.Rajesh holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with majors in Information Technology & Project Management, along with additional Microsoft certifications. He is a strategic thinker, team player, and innovative problem solver, with extensive experience in IT infrastructure design and project implementation. 

Beyond his professional work, Rajesh is an avid golfer, representing his club in the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union (KZNGU) Allerton League. He also enjoys outdoor adventures and travelling to new destinations, both locally and internationally.

Ntombizethu Luthuli
Finance Intern - Administration and Finance

Ntombizethu Luthuli grew up in the Mvunyane Rural Area (Vryheid) under the Abaqulisi Municipality. She is a funny and bubbly person who values and respects others. Ntombizethu comes from a wonderful, large family that has instilled in her good behavior, manners, and a sense of humanity.

In her free time, she enjoys playing netball and loves jogging and exercising. She has a deep appreciation for maskandi music, embracing her traditional roots more than any religious affiliation. Dancing to maskandi songs and celebrating her culture are some of her favorite pastimes.

Currently, Ntombizethu is a finance in-service trainee at Mpilonhle Organisation, having come from Nkungumathe Organisation. In her role, she assists finance officers and helps others in the office, also taking on responsibilities as an admin/receptionist.

Msizi Zwane
HR Intern

Msizi Zwane is currently an HR Intern at Mpilonhle organisation, where he focuses on maintaining employee records and databases, ensuring confidentiality is upheld. Originally from the eMondlo area in Vryheid, he studied Human Resource Management at Mthashana TVET College.  In his free time, Msizi enjoys watching soccer, socializing on social networks, and playing games. He has a diverse taste in music, favouring Masada and gospel genres.

Thulani Mnyandu
Programme Manager – Global Fund Men-Having-Sex-with-Men (MSM) project - Programme Staff

Thulani Mnyandu is employed as a Programme Director at Mpilonhle, where he provides oversight for the Key Populations programme implemented in the King Cetshwayo District, which consists of five sub-districts.

As a qualified social worker with over 16 years of experience, Thulani is dedicated to providing high-quality care and support to children, women, key populations, and families who are socially excluded or facing challenges in their lives.

He possesses extensive knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices, particularly in their application to complex cases, group work, and community issues. Additionally, Thulani has experience in project management, having successfully led several programmes throughout his career.

From 2018 to 2021, he served as the chairman of the Board of Directors for a well-established organisation in KwaZulu Natal. Thulani identifies three key strengths that contribute to his effectiveness: firstly, his ability to understand the problems and needs of the individuals he serves; secondly, his experience, which enables him to assess, recommend, and develop care packages that enhance the quality of clients’ lives; and finally, his proven track record of managing complex caseloads and bringing them to successful conclusions on time, ensuring satisfaction for all parties involved.

Zandile Mngomezulu
Coordinator School and GBV interventions - Programme Staff

At Mpilonhle, Zandile Mngomezulu serves as a Program Manager for PEPFAR’s HIV/AIDS case finding project and the LOTTO GBV victim empowerment project. Additionally, she is the Program Coordinator for MSM and Human Rights. Zandile focuses on her professional growth by learning from the communities she serves, providing them with essential information and services. Her primary goal is to empower community members to make informed decisions about their lives.

Zandile faces challenges such as a lack of community participation and limited resources for sustaining projects, particularly in terms of funding. However, she makes a significant difference by actively participating in fundraising efforts, which helps secure additional funding to maintain some programs. She collaborates with government institutions to ensure clients continue receiving care even after the Mpilonhle program concludes.

Born and raised in Kwa-Mhlabuyalingana, Zandile is the eldest child in her family. She grew up in her mother’s household, living with her grandmother and uncles. Before pursuing her degree in social work, she worked as a hairdresser. In her free time, Zandile enjoys listening to Afro pop and R&B music, and she happily engages in activities that her children enjoy.

Nothando Msweli
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Nothando Minenhle Msweli, born in 1989 in Richards Bay, is a dedicated DSI Coach at Mpilonhle. She earned a Diploma in Public Management from the University of Mangosuthu. Raised in a creative and supportive family, she relocated to Mtubatuba due to work and marriage.

Over the years, Nothando has been driven by a strong desire to make a meaningful impact and share her knowledge with her community. Her passion for working with children, particularly in the areas of computer literacy, mathematics, and science, led her to start her career as an Education Assistant (EA). In this role, she assisted children with typing, printing, and various educational tasks. She later advanced to become a coach at Mpilonhle, where she helped children practice math, develop typing skills, and explore the internet to research school-related topics and enhance their learning through reading.

Today, Nothando is making a significant difference by addressing global issues through the program she is involved in. She believes this initiative is a life-changing experience for the children, especially in rural areas. As the world continues to evolve, she is committed to helping these communities adapt and gain knowledge in technology, recognizing that everything in the modern world relies on electronic devices. Nothando is confident that the impact of this program can extend far beyond local areas, with the potential to grow into something much larger.

Nomkhosi Mkhize
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Nomkhosi Mkhize is an enthusiastic goal-driven and dedicated young lady. She is dedicated to her work. She is the most devoted, diligent young woman who come from a rural background.

She completed her National Senior Certificate (NSC) at Masibonisane High School in Mfekayi has obtained her Diploma in Marketing at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in the year 2019. 

In 2023 she then started working for Mpilonhle Organization within the Computer Based program in collaboration with Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) which is a grant focused on assisting in Mathematics and helping the learners in rural schools. Where she is working passionate and the learners love attending classes in her lab which is in Nhliziyo High School.

She secures experience through practical exposure to a task. This role encourage help sharpen their technical skills and developed their understanding of how technology. This position groomed Nomkhosi Mkhize.

Njabulo Gumede
Peer Educator – Programme Staff

Njabulo Gumede is a loving person who enjoys making others happy. He is originally from Estcourt but currently live in Esikhawini. While every job has its challenges, Njabulo focuses on continuing to serve his community.

Njabulo cherishes his family, especially his two younger brothers and he is always eager to learn more. Cooking is one of his passions. He loves listening to R&B music. Overall, he consider himself a calm and collected person.

Ntombifuthi Mkhize
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Ntombifuthi is a dedicated and passionate professional with a strong background in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and education. After completing her studies at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), where she obtained a Diploma in ICT, Ntombifuthi embarked on a career that blends both technology and teaching.

At DUT, Ntombifuthi developed a comprehensive understanding of ICT systems, and software, This academic foundation led to an internship in IT Support at Mpilonhle Organisation, where gained hands-on experience in troubleshooting, system maintenance, and customer service within the IT field. This role helped sharpen her technical skills and deepened their understanding of how technology can optimize business operations and improve user experience.

In addition to their technical expertise, Ntombifuthi has also demonstrated a strong commitment to education. She took on a 2-year contract as a Math Assistant Coach at Uphaphazi Primary School in collaboration with Mpilonhle Organisation where she worked closely with Leaners to reinforce her understanding of mathematical concepts and provided personalized support in both individual and group settings. This position allowed Ntombifuthi to develop her coaching and mentorship skills, while also fostering a passion for helping others achieve academic success.

Today, Ntombifuthi continues to balance their interests in both technology and education, With a diverse skill set and a dedication to continuous learning.

Njabulo Thabede
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Thabede Njabulo is a young and adventurous individual who was raised in the rural area of Mtubatuba, specifically in the Mfekayi reserve under ward 21 of the Mtubatuba Municipality, alongside his cherished family.

He enjoys reading books independently and is employed by a company named Mpilohnhle. He holds a teaching degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and possesses four years of experience as a Lab Coach. His upbringing and family background have imparted valuable lessons to him. He considers himself primarily an introvert, though he can exhibit extroverted traits on occasion. A passionate football/soccer enthusiast, he also engages in volleyball as a hobby, excelling in it as well. He has a fondness for South African house music and classic South African tunes. He is characterized by his respectfulness, humility, self-motivation, traditional beliefs, ambition, career focus, creativity, innovation, and a strong willingness to embrace responsibilities. His open-mindedness and friendly demeanour facilitate effective communication with others.

Sanele Nkosi
Linkage-to-Care Officer - Programme Staff

Sanele Wendy Nkosi, born and raised in Empangeni, describes herself as analytical, calculated, and conscientious. She is a mother of two boys, expressing deep love and devotion to them.

In her role as a Linkage Officer, Sanele strengthens connections between the community and healthcare facilities, collaborating with team leads, nurse clinicians, and data capturers. She manages a patient referral system and implements case management to ensure that HIV-positive clients are linked to care and can initiate treatment on the same day using the “handshake” approach.

Sanele faces challenges such as tracking clients lost to follow-up and the lack of a LABTRACK system, which hinders her work efficiency. Despite these obstacles, she is committed to ensuring that patients enter specialized HIV care promptly after diagnosis, achieving success in facilitating timely visits with HIV medication providers.

Fikile Mbatha
Social Worker - Programme Staff

Fikile Mbatha born and raised in Ulundi.  I can describe myself as an introvert. I prefer spending time alone or with a small group of people. I am reserved and thoughtful. Sometimes I feel drained after social interactions.

Her role as a social worker is to provide psychosocial care and support to individuals, couples and families who are experiencing Gender Based Violence. Conduct training, dialogues and awareness campaigns to the community.

Challenges that she comes across in her line of work is working with vulnerable people, high workload and burnout.
For her, it is important to listen and support people, empowering them to improve their lives and also protect people from harm when it is necessary.

Zinhle Radebe
Peer Educator - Programme Staff

Zinhle Philisiwe Radebe, born on July 14, 1987, in KwesakaMthethwa Ward 15, completed her foundational education at Oshwashweni Primary School and her secondary education at Welabasha High School, where she completed her grade 12 in 2006. In 2018, Zinhle pursued further studies in counselling at the KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College and also completed a First Aid course at Indlela Yempilo.

Zinhle began her career as a Lay Counsellor at the Gays and Lesbian Community and Health Centre, where she worked for approximately five years. She is currently employed at the Mpilonhle Organization as a Peer Educator, where she provides health education to her clients, with a specific focus on the MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) community.

In her role, Zinhle ensures that clients receive comprehensive support, including quality health education. Her duties include:

  • Screening for TB  – Conducting HIV testing – Referring clients to appropriate services – Offering face-to-face counselling – Ensuring clients return to care as needed – Mobilizing and encouraging more individuals from the MSM community to engage with health services

Zinhle is currently based in Empangeni, at No. 12 Panorama Bardenhorst Street, and works at Empangeni Clinic.

Sihle Malinga
Peer Educator - Programme Staff

Sihle Malinga is a dedicated Peer Educator at the Mpilonhle Organization. Trained to provide health and wellness education, Sihle offers support to peers on a variety of topics, including sexual health, STI check-ups, administering PrEP to MSM (Men who have Sex with Men), and distributing condoms and lubricants. Additionally, Sihle addresses the stigma surrounding sexual health within the community.

Sihle strongly believes that encouraging MSM individuals to get tested for HIV and providing them with PrEP can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission. Through this program, Sihle has gained valuable work experience and developed a deep understanding of how to treat MSM individuals with respect and dignity, all while fostering strong partnerships with colleagues to further the program’s goals.

Nothando Ndabandaba
Peer Educator- Programme Staff

Nothando Ndabandaba, born at Hlabisa Hospital and residing in the Shikishela area. Nothando completed her foundation and higher education at Shikishela and Nkosana High Schools. She holds a Diploma in Teaching Grade R from SANTS University and is currently pursuing her degree.

Nothando began her professional journey in 2013, working at the Mpilonhle Organisation as a Science and Maths Coach Skills Mentor, a role she held until 2017. During this period, she was responsible for guiding and mentoring maths coaches, as well as working in a computer lab. Her duties also involved training learners in basic computer skills and the rules of the program, and she was based in the Umkhanyakude district.

From late 2017 to March 2019, Nothando worked as a Health and Technology Services (HTS) Counsellor for the Interacted Mobile Unit, where she provided health education to youth aged 10 to 24. Her responsibilities included screening clients for TB and STIs, offering pre- and post-test counselling, and capturing client data in the King Cetshwayo District. In July 2020, Nothando transitioned to a role as a Data Capturer, involved in pre-screening for COVID-19 tests, where she worked until January 2021. Since 2023, Nothando has been serving as a Peer Educator under the MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) project. In this capacity, she offers face-to-face counselling, mobilizes MSM and other men to access healthcare services, and provides information on sexual and reproductive health issues, as well as HIV and AIDS. Her work includes mobile clinic outreach and collaboration with health facilities to disseminate crucial health information.  Nothando’s career reflects her commitment to education, health, and empowering others within her community.

Avile Vundla
HRV Ambassador- Programme Staff

Avile Vundla serves as an HRV Ambassador at Mpilonhle Organization, where her role involves documenting cases referred to Social Workers. She is 33 years old and resides in the Ndlangubo area. Avile is a proud mother of two boys and has sadly lost both of her parents.

Avile joined Mpilonhle in 2024. She completed her matric in 2012 and later pursued an ABET certificate through UNISA. She also obtained a certificate in HIV and AIDS and ART treatment from Indlela Yempilo Academy.

Avile enjoys traditional food and Maskandi music. She has a strong passion for gaining new knowledge from others and is known for her respectful nature.

Zandile Sithole
Peer Educator- Programme Staff

Born and raised  in Mtubatuba, Zandile Sithole is a passionate, outspoken, gregarious and driven individual who loves jogging, soccer and cooking. She is a mother of two handsome boys, one of whom is  in his second year at Durban University of Technology and other one is in Grade 12. She is a highly experienced HIV/AIDS Lay Counsellor with over 10 years of experience in pre-counselling and post counselling in HIV testing. Zandile recently took a refresher course because she likes to stay up to date, especially with her career as a Lay Counsellor. Serving her religion and community as a volunteer has always captivated her. She firmly thinks that helping others is a virtue.

Nomfundo Majola
Enrolled Nurse - Programme Staff

Nomfundo Majola is a registered Enrolled Nurse and has been in the healthcare industry for 4 years. Her job includes monitoring  patient’s treatment , devising care plans  and providing medical care during emergencies.  She believes that every single life matters , so she ensures that every day she handles her job with great careful attention.

She had her Bachelor of nursing from Indumiso college.

When she’s not taking care of parents she goes rappelling and tries extreme sports. She uses her passion in sport in making her body healthy-like hitting two birds with one stone. She has also volunteered in many medical missions ever since she was a nursing student until now.

Nomathemba Myeni
HTS Counsellor - Programme Staff

Nomathemba Myeni was born in KwaMsane Township, where she completed both her foundation and higher education. She later attended SANTS University to pursue a teaching degree. Nomathemba also completed a 10-day HIV/AIDS Counselling and Adherence Support Program at Unkulunkulu Unathi AIDS Project.

Since 2010, Nomathemba has been working at Mpilonhle Organization as an HTS Counsellor. In her role, she educates people about various health issues such as HIV, TB, and STIs. She provides services including pre- and post-counselling, HIV testing, and referrals to different clinics. She also screens for TB and STIs. Nomathemba takes great pride in the work being done in the uMkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo districts by Mpilonhle Organisation.

Philile Jabulisiwe Sibiya
Social Auxiliary Worker- Programme Staff

Philile Jabulisiwe Sibiya is employed as a Social Auxiliary Worker under the MSM program, while also working with cases related to human rights violations and gender-based violence (GBV).

She provides psychosocial support to clients and their families, offering information and assistance with reporting cases that require legal attention. Philile also prepares clients for court appearances.

In addition to direct support, Philile equips her clients with various skills to help them sustain themselves in the long term. She organizes support groups, adherence clubs, and community dialogues to spread awareness about human rights violations and GBV.

When cases are beyond her capacity, Philile refers clients to relevant stakeholders, maintaining strong working relationships with organisations in the King Cetshwayo area.

Lwandile Ngema
Peer Educator - Programme Staff

Lwandille works at Mpilonhle Organization as a passionate Peer Educator, HIV Counsellor and Tester, and Ambassador for the LGBTQI+ community, specifically advocating for the rights and health of Men Having Sex with Men (MSM), She dedicate her work to empowering individuals and communities to live their truths boldly and healthily.

With expertise in HIV/AIDS education, counselling, and testing, She provide inclusive, non-judgmental, and culturally sensitive support to marginalized populations. Her mission is to bridge the gap in healthcare access, reduce stigma, and promote awareness about the importance of HIV testing, treatment, and prevention. As an ambassador, she amplifies the voices and experiences of MSM and LGBTQI+ individuals, advocating for their rights, dignity, and well-being.  She strives to create safe spaces for open dialogue, foster inclusivity, and promote healthy behaviours.

Lwandile joined Mpilonhle in 2024 as a Peer Educator. She completed her matric in 2017. She pursued Road Traffic Management studies in Mangaung Traffic Training College and graduated in 2019 as a Traffic Officer.  She intensified excitement in studying about HIV/AIDS and TB and obtained HIV/AIDS and TB Counselling certificates. 

She is now working together with MPILONHLE to build more informed, supportive and compassionate community that values diversity, equity and inclusivity.

Sanele Bukhosini
HRV Ambassador - Programme Staff

Sanele Bukhosini is a warm and compassionate individual, serving as a Human Rights Ambassador and HIV Testing Counsellor. She is deeply committed to supporting others in navigating their health and life challenges, offering guidance and care to those on their journey toward healing and growth.

Outside of her professional work, Sanele enjoys spending quality time with her family. As a passionate fashion designer, she can often be found sewing and designing, expressing her creativity through her craft.

Sandile Mgabhi
Peer Educator - Programme Staff

Sandile is a Peer Educator with a couple of years of experience and has previously worked with other organisations. His role has taught him the importance of maintaining confidentiality while working with clients. Originally from Ladysmith, he currently resides in Esikhawini. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends and listening to music.

Ntombiyenkosi Mkhwanazi
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Ntombiyenkosi Mkhwanazi serves as DSI Lab Coach at Mpilonhle Organisation in Department of science and innovation, the computer based learning programme which provides access to computer-assisted learning in rural schools of disadvantaged communities. Where she facilitates lab usage and maintenance, fostering good relationship with educators and school management, provides offline Educational content to the program, ensure that the programme runs smoothly in schools and ensuring the security of access

Ntombiyenkosi was born in 13 July 1996, South Africa, Kwazulu-Natal (Empangeni). Her family is originated from Mtubatuba where she relocated to in 2021. She was raised by her mother, and has a well cultivated character. Completed her matric in 2015 At Masakhane High School, and holds an Information Technology and computer science from Umfolozi TVET College.

She’s a writer and poem reciter, goes by the stage name “Noxie Umvini Wabezizwe ”.  In 2020, she was granted the opportunity of a life time to write poem in honour of legendary Prof Otty Nxumalo during a broadcast hosted by the late Ukhozi FM presenter and award winning poet, Bongani Mavuso. In early 2021 she volunteered in an online radio as Radio Technician and presenter which was located in Pinetown.

From November 2021 she served as Educator Assistant at Masibonisane High School, continued this role until 2022 and joined Mpilonhle in 2023. She believes that Action is the foundation of success, you better run slowly than keep standing.  

Thabile Linda
HRV Ambassador - Programme Staff

Thabile Linda is from Esikhawini (Port-Darnford). She comes from a loving and supportive family of seven, where they have always made lasting memories together.

Before pursuing her current path, Thabile studied Beauty Therapy. Initially, it wasn’t something she felt passionate about, but as she continued to learn, she found herself enjoying it more and more.

In her free time, Thabile enjoys cooking and shopping. Her favourite music genre is Gospel.

Lindi Mkhwanazi
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Lindi Mkwanazi, born in 1994, is deeply passionate about education and community development. She resides in the rural area of Gunjaneni (Nsolweni), where she dedicates her time to uplifting young people and their communities. Lindi is happily married and a proud parent to three beautiful children, who serve as her greatest motivation and source of joy.

Currently in her final year of pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree at the University of South Africa (Unisa), Lindi’s academic journey reflects her commitment to both personal and professional growth.

From 2016 , Lindi has been working at Mpilonhle, an organisation focused on improving the well-being of communities. This experience enriched her skills in community engagement and strengthened her dedication to helping others. Additionally, she works as a coach in three schools—Khulubone Primary School, Nhliziyo High School, and UPhaphazi Primary School—where her role often requires relocation, further enhancing her adaptability and resilience.

As she continues on this path, Lindi strives to use her knowledge and experience to inspire learners and contribute to the development of vibrant and empowered communities.

Celimpilo Ntombela
DSI Coach - Programme Staff

Celimpilo Samkelisiwe Ntombela is an over enthusiastic, goal-driven and pro-active young lady. She is dedicated to her work and always meets and exceeds the targets set for her. She works well within a team and always uplifts the team spirit.

She has qualifications in different variety of fields, she initially obtained an Adult Basic Education (ABET 2015) at UNISA, then an Introduction to SAMTRAC (2014), SAMTRAC (2017) and Incident Investigation (2018) at NOSA Richards Bay. She thereafter obtained her Advanced Computer Literacy Certificate at Avuxeni Computer Academy.

She has previously worked at Standard Bank for 6 years where she has elevated her computer skills and knowledge of software programs, and technical system within the bank. She then started working for Mpilonhle Organization within the Computer Based program in collaboration with Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) which is a grant focused on assisting in Mathematics and helping the learners in rural schools. Where she is working passionate and the learners love attending classes in her lab which is based in Nhliziyo High School.

She will continue to balance her interests in teaching and her love of technology with her variety of skill-sets and commitment to continuous learning to upskill herself. 

Zama Mpanza
Peer Educator - Programme Staff

Zama Sarah Mpanza, born in Johannesburg and raised Ehlalankosi kwaNongoma, who studied a Bachelor of Commerce with specialities of (Economics and Banking Management) at the University of Zululand kwaDlangezwa located near Empangeni. A very outspoken individual who thrives given any tasks.

Given an opportunity by the Mpilonhle Organization she was very much pleased for her first time employment after completing her studies. In her role as Peer Educator, Zama help prevent HIV/AIDS by sharing information, about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) services at the University of Zululand and at the local clinic kwaDlangezwa and encouraging healthy behaviours.

She also help people understand how to reduce their risk of HIV/AIDS. Some of the challenges she faces on her day to day are maintaining focus as she needs to keep a rapo with every patient she’s proving help, addressing knowledge gaps, and ensuring equal participation can arise. Despite these hurdles, harnessing the potential of peer-to-peer learning can significantly enrich training dynamics and foster a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.

Thobisile (Manu) Mthethwa
Linkage-to-Care Officer - Programme Staff

Thobisile Mthethwa is a 32-year-old who was born in Oshwashweni but raised in Cinci Reserve.  She describes herself as a young vibrant energetic and loving individual. She is well known amongst her peers as “Manu” which is a nickname given to her by her mother meaning little one.

Thobisile Mthethwa started working for Mpilonhle in 2017 as a Teen Parenting Facilitator she is now a Linkage Officer, where she is responsible for supporting the HIV and TB by linking and navigating patient through referral processes and ensuring linkage to care. Daily activities also include conducting tracing of clients who have missed their appointments or defaulted from care, ensuring adherence to DOH policies, guidelines and SOPs.

Manu enjoys spending time with her two daughters. She is currently enrolled at the University of South Africa for Bachelor of Accounting and Science.

Sithembiso Mngomezulu
Social Worker Programme Staff

Sthembiso Mngomezulu works as a social worker, focusing on enhancing clients’ coping abilities and reducing stigma related to gender, tuberculosis (TB), and HIV. Providing the best possible service to his clients not only benefits them but also fosters his professional growth.

Occasionally, he faces barriers in referrals with other stakeholders. However, most clients are now aware of their basic human rights and know how and where to report human rights violations.

He lives in Ngwelezane and comes from a loving and supportive family. He has gained work experience in various roles, including as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) and as a social worker at the Department of Education.

In his free time, he enjoys planting trees and watching TV series and soccer matches. While he may not be a big fan of music, he appreciates all genres. Above all, he strives to be approachable to everyone.

Simphiwe Ntshangase
Social Auxiliary Worker – Programme Staff

What Simphiwe does is vital both for herself and for the community she serves. She works with vulnerable community and in need of care and protection as they navigate their life journeys, striving to uplift their standard of living and overall well-being.

Every job has its challenges, and overcoming them shapes personal growth. One of the biggest challenges she faces comes from clients who often demand her full attention without considering that she has other clients to support. Some may refuse assistance, insisting on working at their own pace, while others may be difficult or in denial about their situations, even doubting her interventions. Professionalism helps her navigate these challenges, and she relies on her supervisor for guidance.

Simphiwe comes from Hluhluwe kwaNibela area, known for being disadvantaged and lacking access to essential public services. Born and raised there. She comes from a small family of four: herself, her brother, her child, and her mother. Growing up, they rarely visited extended family, it was sweet and enjoyable as a results she finds it difficult to adjust to larger families.

She registered for her honours degree with Unisa, she deregistered out of fear of the challenges ahead.

In her free time, she enjoys listening to Zion songs, finding joy in solitary moments rather than in crowds. While she is naturally introverted and finds it hard to make friends, she is also hyperactive and loves interacting and learning, especially in educational contexts.

Nobuhle Tembe
Data Quality Officer - Monitoring and Evaluation

Nobuhle Tembe serves as the Data Quality Officer at Mpilonhle organisation. She believes it is crucial to review data before submitting reports to ensure the delivery of high-quality work and the accurate completion of all forms. One of the challenges she faces is addressing missing information in the forms, often having to re-explain how to fill them out daily when they are submitted. She also assists with making corrections after submissions.

At 31 years old, Nobuhle hails from Mtubatuba and is a proud mother to a wonderful young boy. She lost her father at a young age and was raised by her mother. Nobuhle joined Mpilonhle in 2016 as a coach and continued in that role until 2023. She completed her matric in 2011 and pursued a Management Assistant N4 course in college, followed by studies in Office Administration and End User Computing the following year. Developing a passion for teaching, she earned her Diploma in Teaching Grade R, graduating in 2019, and is currently working toward her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at UNISA.

Nobuhle has a friendly personality and spends a lot of time at church. She enjoys organizing events and is quite outgoing, with a love for traveling. Depending on her mood, she might not always be into music, but she loves to dance, even though she admits she’s not very good at it.

Anele Bukhosini
M&E Officer - Monitoring and Evaluation

Anele works as an M&E Officer but often takes on various tasks beyond her title. She believes that feedback on project progress is crucial for improvement, although she faces challenges, including mockery from teammates for emphasizing target reach and quality. Despite questioning the impact of her work, she hopes her contributions benefit others.

Anele was born at Thokozani Clinic in Esikhawini and completed her education in the KCD district, later attending UKZN Howard College. She comes from a loving family and values personal growth. A trained social worker, she is pursuing various skills, including project management and data systems, with aspirations to obtain a Master’s degree

In her free time, she often worries about her career, relationships, and personal aspirations, including being a good role model for her daughter and achieving fitness goals. Despite these concerns, she values her experience at Mpilonhle, feeling it has significantly contributed to her personal and professional development

Zandile faces challenges such as a lack of community participation and limited resources for sustaining projects, particularly in terms of funding. However, she makes a significant difference by actively participating in fundraising efforts, which helps secure additional funding to maintain some programs. She collaborates with government institutions to ensure clients continue receiving care even after the Mpilonhle program concludes.

Born and raised in Kwa-Mhlabuyalingana, Zandile is the eldest child in her family. She grew up in her mother’s household, living with her grandmother and uncles. Before pursuing her degree in social work, she worked as a hairdresser. In her free time, Zandile enjoys listening to Afro pop and R&B music, and she happily engages in activities that her children enjoy.

Zamokuhle Ngubane
Data Capturer - Monitoring and Evaluation

Zamokuhle Noxolo Ngubane serves as a Data Capturer at Mpilonhle organisation. Her role is essential for maintaining accurate records of clients, though she sometimes faces challenges when network issues arise, leading to backlogs and increased pressure to meet deadlines. She emphasizes the importance of sharing information to streamline work with the database.

Zamokuhle is a 34-year-old woman originally from the rural area of Manguzi in KwaZulu-Natal, and she currently resides in Mandlazini Phase 4 in Richards Bay. She has a supportive and loving family that she can always rely on in times of need. She completed her Matric in 2007 and holds a Public Administration and Management Certificate from UNISA, as well as a Computer Certificate. Over the years, she has worked in various companies, gaining valuable experience that has enhanced her ability to collaborate effectively with others.

In her spare time, Zamokuhle enjoys moments of solitude, reading novels, and listening to gospel music. She also loves attending church services.

Phindile holds an Occupational Health and Safety Management certificate from IQ Academy, as well as a Higher Certificate in Project Management from Mancosa. She has previously worked for two Durban-based companies: Servest Landscaping in 2015 and Ibala Organics in 2016. In her free time, she enjoys listening to gentle music, such as R&B and traditional Maskandi tunes.

Phumzile Sikakane
Data Capturer - Monitoring and Evaluation

Precious Phumzile Sikakane works as a data capture specialist at Mpilonhle in Richards Bay. In her role, she captures data from various source documents into the database for processing and management. She verifies data before entering it into the system, ensuring accuracy and integrity. Implementing quality control measures is a key responsibility, as effective data capturing is crucial for accurate data analysis, which ultimately influences decision-making processes within the organisation. Poor data capturing can lead to incorrect conclusions and significant challenges.

Some of the challenges she faces include incomplete forms, which result in unreliable data, and late submissions, which can delay reporting and create unnecessary backlogs. Additionally, extracting data from paper documents into a digital database presents its own difficulties.

Originally from Nseleni, Precious is a proud mother of four—three boys and one girl. She is married and considers herself a strong woman. While she can be difficult at times and may have a few screws loose, she embraces her uniqueness. Precious has been in the NGO data industry for 14 years.

In her spare time, she enjoys dancing, singing, and laughing. She loves watching TV, listening to music, and spending time with her family. Her favourite music genres are gospel and Maskandi.

Finally, she wants to express her gratitude to the company for the opportunity to work with them. She appreciates their belief in her abilities.

Khethiwe Sibiya
Data Capturer - Monitoring and Evaluation

Khethiwe Sibiya serves as a Data Capturer, where she is responsible for capturing confidential client information and ensuring that the data is saved and stored according to prescribed guidelines. One of the challenges she faces in her role is network issues, which can lead to backlogs and duplicate entries. A significant positive change she has made in the workplace is treating everyone with respect.

Khethiwe hails from Mtubatuba and comes from a family of five, including her parents and two brothers. Her parents were hardworking individuals, but sadly, she lost her father in 2020 and her brother in 2023. They instilled in her the importance of education and diligence. She is now engaged and has a beautiful daughter.

Khethiwe holds a Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies, which she earned from the University of Zululand, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of South Africa. The skills she acquired during her studies have helped her advance her career rapidly.

In her free time, Khethiwe enjoys cooking, solving mathematics problems, and dancing, although she often finds herself too busy to practice these hobbies. She loves listening to Zion music and Maskandi. She is a Zulu girl!.

Sandile Manqele
Assets Management Assistant - Administration and Finance

Sandile Manqele is a young adventurous man who grew up in a rural area called at Mabhuyeni reserve kwaMthethwa , ward 7 under uMfolozi Municipality with his beloved family. He have learnt a lot from where he comes from and from his family. He would think of himself as an introvert that can also be an extrovert sometimes. A football/soccer fan but plays volleyball as his hobby since he is also good at it. He loves listening to South African house music jams and South African old school R n B music in his spare time. He plays a role of being an assets management assistant at Mpilonhle organisation. His role is important because it is his responsibility to keep track of all Mpilonhle assets (new and old) from the moment they are procured till they are exhausted and disposed. With his skills and knowledge of allocating and documenting assets in order, it becomes easy for others to get them without complications.

In addition He believe he is a kind of human being that is respectful, humble, self-motivated, less religious but more traditional believer, ambitious, career driven, creative, innovative, highly motivated to accept responsibilities, open minded and his friendly personality allows him to communicate well with other people.

Nonhlanhla Mtiyane
Support Staff
Nonhlanhla is a humble, respectful person who doesn’t like noise. She grew up in the local rural community of Cinci and  has been working at Mpilonhle for since its inception in 2006, helping to maintain the offices. She also helps with cooking during Mpilonhle community or educational functions. She is always willing to support others where she can. When she gets a chance to relax, she enjoys spending time with her two kids, mother and older sister. 
Sibongile Mkhabela
Events Assistant - Support Staff

She is a respectable mother living in Cinci Reserve with her youngest daughter and her grandkids. She has been working for Mpilonhle for many years and is reliable to her employers. She started working for Mpilonhle in 2007. She enjoys attending church services at Damascus Zion. She loves to relax and has a strong passion for baking cakes in her free time.

Sifiso Nzimande
Facilities Assistant - Support Staff

Sfiso Nzimande is a dedicated Facilities Assistant with experience in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of facilities. He is skilled in managing cleaning schedules, conducting regular inspections, and coordinating repairs to maintain a safe and efficient environment. Known for his excellent communication and problem-solving skills, Sfiso effectively collaborates with team members and vendors to address maintenance issues promptly. Passionate about creating a welcoming atmosphere, he thrives in fast-paced settings and prioritizes his work to ensure all facility needs are met efficiently.

Born and raised in Mtubatuba, Sfiso is the eldest sibling and lives with his mother and two younger sisters. In his free time, he enjoys working on home improvement and crafting projects, as well as spending quality time with his son and family.

Phindile Sikhakhane
Transport Officer - Support Staff

Phindile Sikhakhane is the transport officer for Mpilonhle. With two years of experience in transport management, she is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all company vehicles. This includes prioritizing the maintenance and upkeep of the vehicles to guarantee the safety of drivers.

Phindile holds an Occupational Health and Safety Management certificate from IQ Academy, as well as a Higher Certificate in Project Management from Mancosa. She has previously worked for two Durban-based companies: Servest Landscaping in 2015 and Ibala Organics in 2016. In her free time, she enjoys listening to gentle music, such as R&B and traditional Maskandi tunes.

Thobani Khumalo
Facilities Assistant - Support Staff

Thobani Khumalo is a Facilities Assistant with 8 years’ experience at Mpilonhle organisation. Responsible for the office gardens maintenance to ensure all gardens looks appropriate at all times. He believe that attractive natural gardens have different benefits to each staff member. He mostly specialises on tree cutting using chainsaws and tractor related tasks.

Thobani grew up at Cinci where he currently residing with his family. He enjoys listening to traditional music like maskandi.

Bheki Nyawo
Facilities and Maintenance Officer - Support Staff

Bheki Nyawo is a traditional devoted family man who was born in Ingwavuma region but currently staying at Mtubatuba in a township called kwaMsane together with his family. He is a husband, a father to his four daughter, and a grandfather of two grandsons. Known for his humour, dedication towards his work and helps people. He possesses quite a lot of skills, knowledge and experience those skills are carpentry, professional driving, painting, crafting. With his spare time he plays guitar, goes to church with his family, likes to do gardening, and he is also a traditional advisor/healer. He started working a Mpilonhle organisation since 2006 when it started until today. Valued for his loyalty, honesty, consistence, and always willing to work at his best for the organisation. His favourite music is Maskandi (traditional music) and gospel.

Mduduzi Ndlovu
Driver - Support Staff

Mduduzi Ndlovu works as a driver, transporting people to various locations in the King Cetshwayo District. Originally from Richards Bay, he has been a driver since 2008, starting with a Code 10 license, which he upgraded to Code 14 in 2015. In his free time, Mduduzi enjoys bodybuilding and listening to deep house music.
