Planting the Seeds of Change
Mpilonhle’s Food Garden Programme aims to provide learners from local schools with access to fresh, nutritious food as part of their daily meals, while also assisting local families in learning how to maintain their own gardens
Food Gardens in Schools
Mpilonhle’s Food Garden Programme supports schools in establishing food gardens to supplement school lunches with fresh produce, aiming to improve the nutritional intake and overall well-being of learners.
The programme also seeks to educate families about the benefits of gardening, aligning with the government’s One Home, One Garden initiative.
Nurturing Communities Through Gardening
Gardening is a powerful tool for underprivileged communities, providing fresh food, empowerment, and a sense of belonging. It connects people to nature, builds pride, and strengthens social bonds. This shared activity fosters collaboration and offers a break from daily challenges, supporting the overall wellbeing of these communities.
What is the One Home, One Garden Initiative?
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of KwaZulu-Natal Province established the One Home, One Garden initiative to address rising food insecurity in local communities. The initiative provides deserving households with handheld tools, seeds, seedlings, and fertiliser to help them establish and maintain a garden.
